Easily Organize Your Weekly Menu

Planning my weekly menu is the most important organizing job I do every week. However, I can tend to get in a rut from time to time. Where I do I look for motivation and ideas? The first place I turn is Shelley Wall!  Shelley has been kind enough to share a quick and easy meal planning tip with us! I personally use this tip for dinners and school lunches.

Do​ ​you​ ​feel​ ​like​ ​you’re​ ​stuck​ ​in​ ​a​ ​rut​ ​making​ ​the​ ​same​ ​meals​ ​week​ ​after​ ​week?​ ​I​ ​know ​trying​ ​to come​ ​up​ ​with ​new​ ​dinner​ ​ideas​ ​and​ ​planning​ ​your​ ​meals​ ​for​ ​the​ ​week​ ​can​ ​be​ ​a​ ​little​ ​intimidating, maybe​ ​even​ ​overwhelming.​ ​It​ ​doesn’t​ ​have​ ​to​ ​be!​ ​Meal​ ​planning​ ​can​ ​be​ ​so​ ​easy​.​ ​All​ ​it takes​ ​is​ ​a​ ​little​ ​organization!

We​ ​all​ ​know​ ​that​ ​getting​ ​organized​ ​makes​ ​everything​ ​easier.​ ​Well,​ ​that’s​ ​also​ ​true​ ​when​ ​it comes​ ​to​ ​making​ ​a​ ​meal​ ​plan.​ ​Creating​ ​a​ ​simple​ ​system​ ​is​ ​the​ ​first​ ​step​ ​to​ ​becoming​ ​a successful​ ​meal​ ​planner.​ ​All​ ​you​ ​need​ ​is​ ​some​ ​paper,​ ​a​ ​pen,​ ​scissors​ ​and​ ​a​ ​container ​(jar, cup,​ ​basket – ​almost​ ​anything​ ​will​ ​work).

Things to keep in mind when planning your meals:

  • Keep​ ​it​ ​simple
  • Make​ ​it​ ​fun
  • Get​ ​the​ ​family​ ​involved
  • USE​ ​IT!

Start​ ​by​ ​making​ ​a​ ​list​ ​of​ ​all​ ​your​ ​favorite​ ​meals.​

Get​ ​your​ ​family​ ​involved​. Ask​ ​them​ ​what​ ​their favorite foods​ ​are​.​ ​Create​ ​the​ ​longest​ ​list​ ​possible,​ ​keeping​ ​in​ ​mind​ ​that​ ​you​ ​can​ ​always​ ​add​ ​to​ ​it later.​ ​

Once​ ​you​ ​have​ ​a​ ​good​ ​list,​ ​cut​ ​it​ ​into​ ​strips​ ​so​ ​that​ ​only​ ​one​ ​meal​ ​is​ ​on​ ​each​ ​strip​ ​of​ ​paper. Fold​ ​the strips,​ ​and​ ​put​ ​them​ ​in​ ​your​ ​container.​ ​Shake​ ​it​ ​up.​ Pull​ ​out​ ​seven​ ​random​ ​strips​ ​of​ ​paper, and​ ​that’s​ ​your​ ​dinner menu​ ​for​ ​the​ ​week. Easy!

Write​ ​the meals ​down​ ​on​ ​your​ ​calendar,​ ​a​ ​sheet​ ​of​ ​paper​ ​or​ ​a dry erase ​board.​ Then,​ ​return​ ​the​ ​strips​ ​of​ ​paper​ ​to​ ​the​ ​container to be reused.​ You​ ​can add​ ​new meal​ ​ideas​ ​to​ ​your​ ​container​ ​at​ ​any​ ​time.​ ​You​ ​can​​ use​ ​separate​ ​containers​ ​for lunch ideas​ ​and​ ​breakfast ideas. TIP:​ ​Use​ ​small,​ ​stackable​ ​containers​ , with​ ​the​ ​paper​ ​strips​ ​inside,​ ​to​ ​store under​ ​the​ ​counter​ ​or in the pantry until​ ​you​ ​need​ ​them.

Now,​ ​you​ ​have​ ​to​ ​actually​ ​use​ ​your​ ​meal​ ​plan.​

Make​ ​a quick​ ​grocery​ ​list,​ ​and​ ​go​ ​get​ ​the​ ​items​ ​you​ ​need.​ ​When​ ​you​ ​bring​ ​them​ ​home,​ ​clean​ ​and​ ​prep ​food ​before​ ​you​ ​put​ it ​away.​ ​You​ ​are​ ​much​ ​more​ ​likely​ ​to​ ​follow​ ​your​ ​meal plan​ ​each​ ​week​ ​when​ ​everything​ ​is​ ​clean​ ​and​ ​ready​ ​to​ ​use.​ ​Once​ ​meal​ ​planning​ ​becomes​ ​a weekly​ ​habit,​ ​you​ ​might​ ​even​ ​find​ ​yourself​ ​saving​ ​money​ ​and​ ​feeling​ ​better​ ​too!
